NME. Brand identity
NME is one of the biggest music magazines around the world? As you can see from the examples above, all the magazine front covers have the NME masthead in the top left corner? This means people can recognise it and pick it out of the magazine rack over any competitors. Brand identity is all about making people see/think positive things when they see the NME logo. This brand identity is what separates the magazines on sales. The NME brand is also how they attracts such big names to star on the front of there magazine. Examples such as the Arctic Monkeys, Paramore, Lana Del Ray and many others.

XXL Brand Identity
XXL magazine is an American magazine aimed at black teenage Americans. All XXL front covers contain a picture of a famous black singer. They do this so it appeals to its audience. A feature about this brand that shows good brand identity, is that the full masthead is not always on show. This means people still recognize the masthead even if there is only a small portion of the masthead on show. The bottom right magazine is a good example of this. People see the big X and instantly believe its that magazine. XXL is a big brand in America, so artists want to get there picture on the front cover as it gives any artist a good name. The brand is how they attract big names such as Chris Brown and 50 Cent.

Brand identity and values for my music magazine
Brand Identity is crucial for the success of a magazine. Brand Identity is all the features of the magazine put together to make a brand. When you see the Mcdonalds logo, you think of nice food and good service. This is because they have developed a very good/strong brand Identity. To gain the most sales, you need a good brand identity otherwise know one will know who the company is and how good the magazine is.
Definition: How all the elements of the visual appearance of the product contribute to distinguish the overall brand.
Questionnaire Analysis: I am still awaiting my results to my questionnaire. The analysis at the end will determine details like, Target Market, Colour Scheme/house style, Age range and genre.
I have gone for the genre R&B as there is no magazine that puts all focus to this genre. This genre has many fans and has many people wanting to know more. That is where my magazine will come in. I want my magazine to be seen as modern and visual. I want to attract my customers through the pictures and interviews over my information. (this could change after results of questionnaire).

What I should include in my magazine for Plantbrook school?
The magazine I am creating is for school children at Plantsbrook School, so Plantsbrook School children are definitely my primary audience. My secondary audience will be teachers as they also need to know what is going on around the school grounds. I am going to have a section for parents as they will be reading the magazine to keep up on what is going on around Plantsbrook school. One of the most important features my magazine will contain is the list of revision websites. This allows older students to go online and revise through websites like mymaths and BBC Bite size. Some details that could attract people to buying my magazine are features like quizzes and crosswords inside. This will give students something to do at break, lunch or free periods. This will attract sixth formers as well as the younger years. The parent page will contain information like the schools expectations of pupils, rules and uniform policy. All pages will include lots of pictures to make the magazine visual and attractive.
What I have learened in relation to skills, techiques, media concepts and terminology though completig this prelimanary activity?
During this task I have learnt many things. The main factors I have learnt are the conventions of a magazine front cover/contents page.
- Masthead =The name/ logo of a magazine which is bold to introduce and attract a reader to the magazine.
Headlines =large titles which are the main articles in the magazine.
Cover lines =Text which indicates the content of the magazine, which is smaller than a headline.
Pull quotes =uotes that have been taken from the magazine's articles.
Features/ articles =the news and information which is actually included in the magazine.
Lure =pull quotes printed to make the audience want to read more.
Serif style font = A font which includes hooks, brackets and feet.
Sans-serif style font = a font that does not include hooks, brackets and feet.
Pug/ starburst =a shape with text to attract the audience to the magazine.
Layout =the structure of the magazine front cover.
House Style =the theme, colours and text that links all of the magazine together.
Mode of Address =the formality and way the magazine speaks to it's audience.
Visual Syntax =the way in which the readers eye is drawn throughout.
Straplines =headlines in smaller font appearing below a major headline.
Hook =ethod of luring through the design.
Banner =a coloured banner with text on it.
Photos =the images used and how they are placed e.g. being superimposed.
Masking =cutting around a photon to superimpose it on to a background. Gutter = space between columns on the page.
Stand first =introductory paragraph before the main article.
Stroke =line put around text or an article to make it stand out.
Use of colour = how colour is used on the page.
Drop-shadow =shadowing around a text to make it stand out.
Cropping =cutting off parts of an image to emphasise a particular aspect.
Graphics =the use of design for words and images.
The conventions of a contents page are:
· Issue no. & Dates = the date that the magazine is published and the issue number.
· Categories/ sections = categorizing the features of the magazine.
· Columns = organising the text in columns.
· Caption = a small description of the image that the caption is directly below.
· Pictures = images related to the articles.
· Structured layout = making the magazine structured and easier to read.
· Pull quotes = quotes taken from the articles.
· Title (contents) = large text to show that this is the contents page of the magazine.
· Banners –blocks of colour with text on to make the text stand out.
· Headlines =the main title in a large text.
· Numbers = showing the page numbers the articles are on.
· Colour scheme = colours that link to the house scheme.

Target Audience Research Questionnaire
-My genre I have chosen for my music magazine is R&B. examples of R&B music artists are JLS, Jason Durulo, Rihanna, Lionel Richie, Rita Ora and Nicole Scherzinger.-My Magazine will be designed for a mainstream audience as most of the British people listen to R&B-My magazine will be be similar to most other magazines, except my magazine will have more detail and stories. Not just any random stories, the best stories from around the world.-As most people who listen to to R&B are teenagers, it will probably be best to aim the magazine at teenagers as they are more likely to buy it that anyone else.-Singers will want there stories in my magazine because it will be sold to all there listeners. This means more people will buy the product when they see that there favorite singer is on the front cover. for example, if a JLS fan walked pasta magazine with JLS on the front, they are more likely to buy it than those who don't like JLS.
